How long have you worked for BT?
Almost 10 years!
What is your job title?
Principal Software Engineer
What parts of our mission do you connect with?
I like that we are conscientious about what kinds of projects and clients we pursue. We do things that are important and that help people, which matches with BT’s values as well as my own.
What motivates you?
I am very motivated by eliminating items on my to-do list. It’s like a quest in a video game that I get to do every day. Moving an item from “Dev in Progress” to “Dev Complete” in Jira is very satisfying to me.
What advice would you provide to someone interested in your field?
If you have an interest in software development, do it! You don’t need sophisticated equipment. You don’t need certifications or a lot of training or education. There are so many open-source tools available for software development, and even base-model computer hardware is capable of a lot of performance. Go ahead and build something! You can do it!
What skill do you think everyone should learn?
Self-compassion. Every day is easier when you know how to be nice to yourself.
What are you most proud of in your career so far?
Venture. This application makes a difference in the lives of teachers and students. It is forward-thinking, adaptable, and important in getting schools and districts to think about formative content and feedback for students.
Do you have a favorite quote?
"There is a way out of every box, a solution to every puzzle; it's just a matter of finding it." Captain Picard
What are your favorite hobbies?
